Today we decided we would start the product test for the many bags of freeze dried food from Mountain House.I got the kids up pretty early today to hit the store for wraps so we could start our test out right. Once I got home the first thing I did was reach for the frying pan, before grabbing our first bag of Mountain House Freeze Dried Breakfast Skillet. Good thing I read directions and was surprised to find I did not need the pan, nor a microwave. All we had to do was add 1 1/2 cups of boiling water to the bag stir and let it sit for 8-9 mins. The first thing I thought was great nothing like soggy wraps for breakfast.
When I opened the bag I was shocked to find most of the water had absorbed into the food and out came the most delicious looking breakfast mix ever. It was packed full of hash browns, scrambled eggs, sausage, peppers and onions. A little water was still in the bag but once I poured it all out in a bowl to start the wraps I noticed it was not going to dry out, nor was it going to be soggy either.
I love the fact I was able to boil water and add it to the mix and walk away without having to worry about “burning” breakfast as I was folding laundry. The Breakfast Skillet tasted so good and was so easy to make, I think I found my new favorite breakfast food when I’m on the go, plus it would save a trip to McDonalds for a dried out burrito in the mornings. I added Mozzarella cheese and very light mustard to ours. This morning we managed to get 13 grams of protein in.
Thanks to the kids and their ability to eat so fast I was unable to get pictures of their lunch. My daughter Erin decided she wanted to give the freeze dried Buffalo Chicken a try. She wanted to add blue cheese and mozzarella cheese. I did manage to sneak in a bit and I’m still trying to figure out how freeze dried food can taste so good. We had a lot left, seeing it tasted so good we used the rest of it to make the greatest chicken wing dip I have ever had. Hunter thought it was too spicy so we made the freeze dried chicken salad. With it being warm neither of us cared to much for it, but once we put it in the refrigerator and it was cold it made a great lunch. It was loaded with chicken and cranberries which gave it a sweet and yet delectable taste.
All of these were made from the pouch they came in and with no mess it was an easy breakfast and lunch, and clean up was simple. If you have any left all you do is close up the pouch and refrigerate.
